Medicare Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at questions@assuredlegacy.net if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Medicare is the United State's health insurance program for people age 65 or older and younger people receiving Social Security disability benefits. The program helps with the cost of health care, but it doesn't cover all medical expenses or the cost of most long-term care. An Assured Legacy-certified Medicare specialist can help you look at all the options available to you and help you find the plan that best benefits your needs.

Original Medicare covers 80% of your healthcare costs* and leaves the 20% to the patient. The patient then has the option to select a medicare advantage plan or a medicare supplement along with a prescription drug plan to help cover the remaining 20% of Medical Costs and Prescription Drug Costs.

Medicare isn't free. Under Original Medicare, Part A premiums are based on Tax credits, and Part B premiums are based on income.

After Original Medicare, you will also have additional charges depending on the coverage you choose (Medicare supplement or Medicare Advantage) and the health care services you receive.

Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance):

  • Inpatient hospital care, including semi-private rooms, meals, and general nursing care.
  • Skilled nursing facility (SNF) care after a qualifying hospital stay.
  • Hospice care for terminally ill patients.
  • Limited home health services, such as part-time skilled nursing care, physical therapy, and medical social services.

Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance):

  • Doctor visits, including primary care and specialist visits.
  • Outpatient medical services, such as lab tests, X-rays, and preventive screenings.
  • Medically necessary durable medical equipment (e.g., walkers, wheelchairs).
  • Outpatient mental health services, including counseling and therapy.
  • Some preventive services, like flu shots, mammograms, and diabetes screenings.

Original Medicare generally covers medically necessary services and supplies. It provides a baseline level of coverage, but it does not cover prescription drugs, dental care, vision care, hearing aids, or long-term care. However, Medicare beneficiaries have the option to enroll in separate plans to cover these additional services.

Medicare Advantage plans (Part C) combines Part A, Part B, and often prescription drug coverage (Part D). Some plans may offer additional advantages like coverage for routine dental and vision care, allowances for Over- the- Counter and groceries, and things like gym memberships and transportation.

Medicare prescription drug plans (Part D) help pay for Medications prescribed by a doctor or other health care professional.

Medicare supplement insurance plans also known as Medigap, help pay some of the out-of-pocket costs not paid by Original Medicare. The most commonly used Medicare Supplement Plans are Plan G and Plan N.

Medicare Plan G is a Medicare Supplement plan that covers Part A coinsurance, SNF coinsurance, Part A hospice care coinsurance, Part B coinsurance, Part B excess charges, blood coverage, and limited foreign travel emergency coverage. It does not cover the Part B deductible. Specific details and costs may vary, so speak with a Assured Legacy - certified Medicare Specialst to compare plan offerings from different insurance companies to find the best fit for your needs.

Medicare Plan N is a Medicare Supplement plan that covers Part A coinsurance, hospital costs, Part A deductible, hospice care coinsurance, SNF coinsurance, Part B coinsurance, blood coverage, and limited foreign travel emergency coverage. It does not cover the Part B deductible and may involve copayments for doctor visits and emergency room visits. Excess charges are also limited. Specific details may vary, so review plan offerings from different insurance companies.
